Hmmm.. this is an interesting discussion.

When I lived in the Netherlands, I was informed by the RDW (vehicle
registration agency) that it was illegal for residents to drive foreign
registered cars that belonged to them. Unfortunately, it was also
impossible to re-register a vehicle in the Netherlands unless you were
officially resident in the country (i.e. listed in the population
register). This begged the question of how you were actually supposed to
drive your vehicle to the registration centre without breaking the law. D'oh!

The reason for this nonsense, is of course to prevent residents avoiding
the so-called 'luxury tax' (more correctly known as 'BPM') imposed on
vehicles amongst other things.
