culminating you may recall with that bp record 7day sky shot arrival delay
i clearly needed to get a fresh look at armook

which i finally did a few days ago
& these are my new observations & new conclusions
with apologies for my former ignorance

first
there is no reason to suppose the capstone is merely a pedestalized
decapitation of the original 1823 rock
but every reason to conclude it is all that is visible of the complete &
still fully erected original rock
the rest of which is encapsulized by the 2 successive surrounding
monumentations in 1915 & 1955

but
this 1823 rock
with top dimple still distinct & date almost completely readable
cant be in its original position

rather it must have been replanted here
because the entire hillside on which it originally stood has long since been
graded away in 20th century quarrying & road construction

whether the rock was replanted in its original 1823 position however or 319
feet south of the original position remains unclear

there is no evidence of any marker or former marker 319 feet due north of
the monument
nor any 319 feet due south of it
nor 319 feet sse along arok for that matter

& there is not necessarily any reason to conclude there has ever been any
319 foot southward displacement of the monument
but the data in bus&ss make just such a change seem likely to have occurred
in the 1840s

but there is no reason to believe newspaper or folkloric reports of any
historical displacement of armook eastward or westward at any time

on the contrary
bus&ss reports reparations were paid to the cherokees rather than correct a
faulty historic survey

certainly the old stone was extracted & replanted during the 20th century
roadwork
yet not necessarily at all displaced at that time
rather only replanted at its regular location but lowered elevation after
the grading was completed

this only or last replantment of the rock probably occurred in 1915 or 1955
