I don't think place of birth equals sovereignty, so I
am not sure the embassies and Camp Ray comparisons are
entirely applicable here. Didn't somebody mention
that the fences between Mexico and USA is somewhat on
the USA side and Mexican women used to come to USA
side but were denied citizenship for children as USA
did not administer there. I was talking with a friend
(non-geography) about citizenship when I found out
that McCain was born in Panama Canal Zone, so I am
trying to find out the exact nature of place of birth
and citizenship and sovereignty as such as much for
non-geography as geography reasons.
Now Alaska and Hawaii are fragmented from the rest of
USA but they are not fragmented themselves, though it
could be argued for both. Some islands are far enough
from other islands or mainland to be considered a
fragment as some has mentioned it. Plus Tarr Inlet
separated Hyder from the mainland to create a tongue
though it's not really a fragment. Hawaii has many
(tiny enough not to be called such) islands in a chain
and Midway Island, not part of Hawaii, intrudes. I am
pretty sure Midway is far enough from Hawaii that the
territorial sea doesn't really connect. I have seen
some atlases with theoretical boundaries where Midway
Boundaries trend north thus connecting rest of Hawaii
with Kure, the westernmost. More interestingly
Honolulu County itself is fragmented as all the
Northwestern Islands are part of the Honolulu County
even though Nihau and Kauai, two islands between the
Northwestern Island and Oahu, aren't. Check the map
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/islands_oceans_poles/hawaiian_islands.jpg
for all the island's positions though boundaries don't
show.
