You can also see the list of ISO 3166-1 reserved codes at
http://www.ccc.de/%7Eandy/ICANN/iso3166-res.pdf. These are never officially
published, but are sometimes useful for distinguishing autonomous or
semi-autonomous territories within sovereign states (e.g. AX for Ă…land
Islands - Finland, or IC for Canary Islands - Spain).

As I mentioned in a previous message, some of these codes actually exist as
Internet top-level domains, along with others (e.g. .su - Soviet Union, .cs
- Czechoslovakia) that are now officially listed in ISO 3166-3 (former
countries and territories).
