From the treaty:

Thence the boundary follows the municipal border between Harreslev and Froslev to

a point about 400 meters North of the farm Simondys, then crosses a field path and

thereupon follows the Western and Southern limits of a land area situated on this

road until a point 250 meters East of the said farm where the limits mentioned again

strike a road; following the Western side of this road a distance of about 250 meters

to the South it turns Westward and thereupon joins the Southern limit of the land of

Simondys farm until it meets the field path from Ellund to Froslev, which it crosses

and turns Northwestwards, where 167 meters further it meets the municipal border

between Ellund and Froslev, which border it follows a distance of about 2,300

meters, so as to enclose a portion of the area with buildings belonging to the 2

farms of Ellund Mark. This portion of the 2 farms with an extent of about 36 hectares

is thereby allotted to Denmark, but in such a way that the field path South of the 2

farms remains with Germany, and the boundary thereafter again meets the

municipal border at a point lying about 500 meters further West.

I have notice the same difference between DEDK and the property fences in a few areas. When we visited the Danish Survey Office (www.kms.dk) in charge of the border earlier this year, I asked the question, they didn't have an explanation. They are also in charge the cadestral mapping, and it would be interesting to see these maps.

I have enclosed the county's cadastral GIS map, and according to that the boundary line running NS is off the live fence, but according to the enclosed topomap it along the fence.

I think asking the farmers is these questions would share more light than asking the officials, as it's there own property.

Oh, boundary marker 67 is the southern most DEDK marker. And unfortunaly I don't have a decent photo in the right direction showing the difference.

hmmmm this photo brings up a question that i have had
for a while and mike you seem like the person who
would know the answer

there's always a buffer of a foot or 2 on the US side
of border markers on both CAUS and MXUS. in doug's
photo the american side is obviously private property
(farm) with the fence ending with enough space to
basically walk around the monument. so my questions
are:

1. Does the private property end at the fence in the
photo or at the monument?

2. if the fence is the property line, then what
purpose does a 2 foot federal buffer around the
country serve when access to the monument can be made
from canada? Or, why doesn't the fence jump back out
to the border a few feet past the monument on either
side? why not a circumference around the monument
instead of the buffer zone around the whole country.

3. if the space between the fence and monument is
private property, then what law or agency created the
zone? who has the authority to tell private property
owners where they can place their fence? (I know in
urban areas it is different and there has to be 15 +/-
feet off the border like that for buildings). Do
government authorities have to ask for access over
private land to get to the monument?

it's interesting to me because in these hard economic
times, the cumulative effective of 2 feet of
unproductive land x 5000+ miles of land borders must
equal a huge drain on the economy. hahahaha just
kidding.

and yes mike i did have a wonderful time in Baarle, Ed
is a wonderful host.
