haha Funny you mentioned that!  I was in Boston a few weeks ago and made the same observation.  A friend told me that was the case because Dunkin' Donuts is headquartered in Rhode Island so there are a lot of locations in southern New England.
Not every American grew up with Krispy Kremes, so I think a lot of the appeal has to do with nostalgia.  The doughnuts aren't bad either.
I had no idea Tim Horton's was a doughnut chain - I always thought it was a cafeteria-style fast food place but then again I've never been.
