The initial design for the coins also made Portugal part of Spain, which
the Portugese obviously weren't too pleased about. Needless to say, the
final design was changed ;-)

It's an absurd idea, particularly on the coins. The EU is bound to expand
in the future and then the map will be incorrect. In addition, the non-EU
states that use the euro are not represented.

If they must have a map, then it should just be a generic representation of
Europe with no borders.
