The Great New England Border Expedition is over. It concluded last night
as I drove into Times Square at midnight (Monday). Fun!!
I met up with Mike Kaufman who came up from Beantown. And there were plenty
of highlights:
- Spending the day checking out the Haskell library (and shooting a short
video clip for a Canadian Children's show with the librarian's 3 kids).
- Spending about four hours with Dora and Lyle Hurtubise -- the couple
featured in the Burlington Free Press article that was recently posted.
- Wandering down Canusa Avenue in Beebe.
- Accidentally driving into Quebec... a Canadian (me) with an American
(Mike) with my New York friend's car with Pennsylvania license plates.
Whoops -- try explaining that one to US officials. Plus the fact that I was
working!!! Yeesh.
- Visiting many other poorly marked crossings.
- Drinking wine with a drunk resident (and his girlfriend) of an apartment
building sitting on the border. They have Canadian cable television hooked
up to the TV sitting in America.
- Having many, many chances to explain the reason for being on the border to
Border Patrol agents, Immigration officials and Customs officers. After a
while, this got quite tiring and stressful. Especially when 3 border patrol
cars showed up when Mike and I were checking out some unofficial crossings
(despite warning the Customs folks).
I'm back to Canada tomorrow -- a night in Toronto before returning home to
Vancouver where I will post all sorts of pictures!!
Cheers!
Doug
