The residents of the NSW town of Albury have rejected a proposal to merge
into a cross-border municipality with the Victorian town of Wodonga.
In a voluntary poll (voting is normally compulsory in Australia), 29% of
registered voters were 66% against a merger. A telephone poll of Wodonga
residents in February found 63% were opposed there, to the creation of
Australia's first cross-border city.
The Premiers of the two states had announced in March last year a plan to
merge the two cities which are separated by the Murray river, which forms
the majority of the states' mutual border.
Although the poll in Albury was unofficial, it would be considered as part
of the public consultation process.

(this is a summary of a short article in Melbourne's "Age" newspaper a
couple of days ago).
