& once again we have a telling soviet topo too<br/>

so it is groundhog day all over again<br/>
except here we have no reason to expect the dry<br/>
convergent might be marked<br/>

for it appears this sketchy soviet tajik uzbek<br/>
interrepublican boundary line hasnt even been formally<br/>
delimited by the successor states<br/>

so what you see of the borders on this map is likely<br/>
all you are going to get <br/>
even if you should go there in person<br/>
& moreover<br/>
the amu darya river & thalweg look far more erratic<br/>
than their hari rud counterparts seen at the previous<br/>
stop<br/>

so aftjuz is already looking still more difficult to<br/>
pin down than was its already well hedged prequel<br/>

& it would be argumentative to make a point of<br/>
disagreeing with jespers pushpin in this case<br/>
or with googles tripoint location projection either<br/>
for that matter<br/>
since it is just a matter of guessing the correct<br/>
channel & the correct place in that channel where the<br/>
true thalweg is actually racing today <br/>
past the dry convergent still coming in at the well<br/>
established angle<br/>

so i figure jesper & google & i each stand a roughly<br/>
equal chance of having guessed the correct channel at<br/>
least <br/>
from among the 3 choices shown by the satpic<br/>
if not also the correct part of that channel<br/>
<br/>
& jesper is looking most golden because he is in the<br/>
channel nearest the bank where the thalweg was last<br/>
definitely seen & mapped<br/>
not more than 30 years ago<br/>
which is perhaps even the direct successor channel of<br/>
that channel<br/>
or it could be a new side channel entirely<br/>
for thats not at all clear<br/>
<br/>
so here you have my no less wild guess than last time<br/>
but cleaving here to the depicted or presumptive<br/>
soviet location <br/>
just in case the thalweg has been relatively stable<br/>
amidst all the surrounding commotion <br/>
as sometimes happens<br/>
& also just because i can<br/>
<br/>
this puts all 3 of us happily on nearly the same line<br/>
& makes all equally likely to be within a kilometer of<br/>
the truth<br/>

or perhaps we should enlarge the window of uncertainty<br/>
to a full mile in this case<br/>
insofar as this situation is looking a bit dicier than<br/>
the previous one<br/>
