also occupies north latitudes between about 41 & 90<br/>
degrees<br/>
since she does at least lay claim to a slice of the<br/>
north pole <br/>
but has no south latitudes at all<br/>
& thus produces a total magnitude if you will of<br/>
around 409 <br/>
in degrees of all directions of tudes combined<br/>
<br/>
or should we multiply the maximum spans of lat x long <br/>
rather than just add them up<br/>
to produce in this case 360 x 49 <br/>
or 17640 square degrees if not spheroidal degrees in<br/>
all <br/>
of amplitude if you will & would prefer<br/>

& i have no idea which of these means of reckoning<br/>
might be more reasonable or more nearly true &<br/>
beautiful<br/>

but in any case la france also reaches longitude 180<br/>
both east & west<br/>
i have just realized <br/>
by virtue of the futuna eez<br/>
projected westward into east longitude from extremest<br/>
west longitude <br/>

indeed farther east than walpole & matthew & hunter<br/>
tho arriving from the west<br/>

for i was in fact approaching the question of<br/>
easternmost france from the wrong direction til now<br/>
<br/>
& moreover france extends from her south polar claim<br/>
to the north sea <br/>
in around 51 degrees of north latitude<br/>
for a whopping 141 degrees of south & north latitude<br/>
combined<br/>
to produce a total magnitude of 501 degrees by<br/>
addition of all 4 tudes<br/>
or 50760 square degrees of amplitude <br/>
by multiplication of both overall spans<br/>
thus handily outreaching russia either way you look at<br/>
it<br/>

the united kingdom also claims a slice of the south<br/>
pole<br/>
as well as eez beyond the shetland islands to around<br/>
62 north latitude<br/>
thus outstripping france in total latitudinal span by<br/>
11 full degrees<br/>
but britannia doesnt appear to reach anywhere near the<br/>
180th meridian any longer<br/>
as she used to before the sun set on her<br/>

in fact it appears 133 west longitude in the pitcairn<br/>
group & about 77 east longitude in the chagos<br/>
archipelago may be her outer limits today<br/>
which produce a mere 210 degrees of total longitudinal<br/>
span<br/>
& 362 degrees of overall magnitude by adding all 4<br/>
cardinal extremes<br/>
or 31920 square degrees of amplitude <br/>
by multiplying them if anyone prefers<br/>

the usa crosses the 180th meridian in at least several<br/>
places<br/>
but the yanks dont claim either of the poles<br/>
& indeed reach only to about 75 north lat off alaska &<br/>
17 south lat off samoa <br/>
for a total magnitude of around 452 degrees <br/>
or an amplitude of 33120 square degrees<br/>
which is in fact much less extreme than france either<br/>
way you look at it <br/>
tho slightly more than the uk & much more than russia<br/>

interestingly enough<br/>
norway claims a slice of antarctica but expressly not<br/>
the south pole<br/>
so lets call that 89 south lat just for fun <br/>
up to the svalbard eez at around 84 north lat<br/>
to make about 173 degrees of total latitude<br/>
which appears to be the worlds greatest span of<br/>
latitude by far<br/>
but 45 east & 20 west appear to be her limits of<br/>
longitude<br/>
so her magnitude is only 238 & amplitude only 11245<br/>

an even better dark horse than norway might be new<br/>
zealand tho because the kiwi & her antarctic slice<br/>
happen to straddle the 180th meridian<br/>
upon which she thus joins russia & the usa & france <br/>
& fiji & tuvalu too for that matter<br/>
& her eezs reach as far north as about 6 degrees south<br/>
lat<br/>
so her magnitude is 444 & amplitude 30240<br/>
which may even be good enough for third place<br/>
