morning after a weeklong hiatus <br/>
by returning for another go at<br/>
lnpiri<br/>
aka the lenox pittsfield richmond tripoint<br/>

you may recall this tripoint had previously been<br/>
elusive enough to be consigned to tough nut status<br/>
but was subsequently earmarked for a retry because of<br/>
a new clue that turned up on closer examination of the<br/>
aerial photo<br/>

namely the bright rectangle in the woods at<br/>
lower right <br/>
which i belatedly recognized as the roofed cellar that<br/>
i had come upon during the first try<br/>

on the companion topo it measures about 460 feet ese<br/>
of the target<br/>
<br/>
so my plan was to sneak past the houses on foot again<br/>
& back into the woods & then find my way back to the<br/>
cellar <br/>
by sweeping across the presumptive target area<br/>
& then to dead reckon my way back toward the objective<br/>
if i hadnt already stumbled on it en route to the<br/>
cellar<br/>

i figured that at 460 foot range in fairly open woods<br/>
even if my bearing was off by a few degrees<br/>
i should still have been easily able to catch sight of<br/>
the target <br/>
<br/>
but in the event i didnt spot the rock either coming<br/>
or going <br/>
nor by carefully combing & scouring the greater<br/>
neighborhood <br/>
again now for the second or third or fourth time<br/>
& felt rather silly for having made a special trip for<br/>
no better result<br/>
<br/>
so much for that plan <br/>
<br/>
or rather that hypothesis<br/>
<br/>
<br/>
when i emerged from the woods i found 2 of the<br/>
property owners having a chat while standing in my<br/>
path of retreat<br/>
so i walked right up to them while apologizing for the<br/>
intrusion<br/>
which however was not so lightly forgiven<br/>
<br/>
not that it was as bad as trespassing in texas or<br/>
anything<br/>
<br/>
but one of them did ask directly who i was & what i<br/>
was doing there<br/>
<br/>
which gave me all the opening i needed to stick my<br/>
topo in their face & explain that i was only a<br/>
tripointing nut  <br/>
& maybe they could even help me find the sucker that i<br/>
was looking for<br/>
<br/>
which of course one of them immediately offered to do<br/>
<br/>
& off we went into the woods together<br/>
tho i still had to mollify his grumbling a bit as we<br/>
climbed<br/>
<br/>
& tho even this local expert had to comb & scour<br/>
he did eventually spot the rock for me<br/>
pretty much just where i must have missed it at least<br/>
twice before<br/>

as you can see in the attachment <br/>
it is rather hard to see<br/>
<br/>
i had to reach & stretch to touch the orange cap of<br/>
the center pipe<br/>
which rose like a periscope about 4 feet above the 4<br/>
foot rock<br/>
& on top of which i figured the tripoint must<br/>
precariously reside<br/>
<br/>
& i explained this to my guide or captor or whatever<br/>
he was<br/>
who was by then warming up to the game<br/>
& he clearly got a kick out of my reaching for the<br/>
tripoint<br/>
& was by then completely disarmed<br/>
<br/>
so thats how i both made my point & made good my<br/>
escape <br/>
all by means of a single improbable interaction<br/>
<br/>

undaunted by the close call & cheap success<br/>
i continued on with lnpiwa<br/>
which you may also recall i have previously previewed<br/>
here <br/>
& previously counted as elusive too<br/>
tho i hadnt done more than drive past the jumpoff<br/>
point <br/>
til today<br/>

but anyway here she is again<br/>

the red cursor cross marks the approximate point of my<br/>
closest approach<br/>

a sore foot alone didnt stop me<br/>
tho i dont believe pain is needed for gain<br/>
so i just slowed down<br/>
<br/>
nor did the mud & wet slippers alone stop me again <br/>
as they did last week<br/>
<br/>
nor the mosquitoes alone<br/>
etc<br/>
but what stopped me in the end here was actually my<br/>
own cluelessness<br/>
<br/>
for i was still feeling a bit rattled by having<br/>
apparently just missed my target at 460 foot range at<br/>
lnpiri<br/>
while here at lnpiwa i had already covered nearly half<br/>
of the prescribed 2900 foot bushwhack<br/>
without finding any of the hoped for blazes along lnpi<br/>
<br/>
& having lost my pace count at either 400 or 500<br/>
i realized i was already reduced to wild guessing &<br/>
just bumbling along<br/>
<br/>
it was then too that i noticed i was again in good old<br/>
october mountain state forest<br/>
<br/>
& at that a voice said<br/>
well then i will just have to come back in october for<br/>
the retry<br/>
just as i had to come back on may day for the lelnwa<br/>
retry the last time i was at october mountain<br/>
<br/>
it seemed to make perfect sense<br/>
<br/>
so i suspended the try on the spot<br/>
& decided to head instead to the walmart for some new<br/>
moccasins<br/>
<br/>
no footwear but refreshments at least i found there at<br/>
coltsville<br/>
where i decided it might be best under the<br/>
circumstances to just proceed with the 2 known<br/>
cakewalks that were also available in the neighborhood<br/>
dalapi & chlane <br/>
also as previoiusly previewed here<br/>
but i only got as far as addressing the former<br/>
aka the dalton lanesborough pittsfield tripoint<br/>

because <br/>
when i reached the rest area shown on route 8 on the<br/>
lapi line<br/>
my brakes malfunctioned severely<br/>
<br/>
& so i had to suspend even these cake walk tries<br/>
& never even made the turn into gulf road <br/>
but turned about & drove directly & very carefully to<br/>
my mechanic<br/>
<br/>
so i am not even going to call that a real try<br/>
<br/>
& what with feet & shoes & brakes all giving out<br/>
simultaneously now <br/>
surely it is back to intermission in even greater<br/>
earnest than before<br/>
<br/>
but the important difference is that the score has<br/>
turned the corner in the meantime from 18 & 9 last<br/>
week to 19 & 8 now<br/>
which means that more than 70 percent of the tripoints<br/>
that have been tried have now been completed<br/>
& the halfway mark to perfection is only 3 points away<br/>
now<br/>

so thanx for your patience & please keep standing by<br/>
but just dont hold your breath for the continuation <br/>
