resumed the berkshire perfection ensemble try this
morning after a weeklong hiatus
by returning for another go at
lnpiri
aka the lenox pittsfield richmond tripoint

reference map
http://www.berkshireweb.com/themap/index.html

you may recall this tripoint had previously been
elusive enough to be consigned to tough nut status
but was subsequently earmarked for a retry because of
a new clue that turned up on closer examination of the
aerial photo
http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?T=1&S=10&Z=18&X=3201&Y=23484&W=1
namely the bright rectangle in the woods at
lower right
which i belatedly recognized as the roofed cellar that
i had come upon during the first try

on the companion topo it measures about 460 feet ese
of the target

so my plan was to sneak past the houses on foot again
& back into the woods & then find my way back to the
cellar
by sweeping across the presumptive target area
& then to dead reckon my way back toward the objective
if i hadnt already stumbled on it en route to the
cellar

i figured that at 460 foot range in fairly open woods
even if my bearing was off by a few degrees
i should still have been easily able to catch sight of
the target

but in the event i didnt spot the rock either coming
or going
nor by carefully combing & scouring the greater
neighborhood
again now for the second or third or fourth time
& felt rather silly for having made a special trip for
no better result

so much for that plan

or rather that hypothesis

when i emerged from the woods i found 2 of the
property owners having a chat while standing in my
path of retreat
so i walked right up to them while apologizing for the
intrusion
which however was not so lightly forgiven

not that it was as bad as trespassing in texas or
anything

but one of them did ask directly who i was & what i
was doing there

which gave me all the opening i needed to stick my
topo in their face & explain that i was only a
tripointing nut
& maybe they could even help me find the sucker that i
was looking for

which of course one of them immediately offered to do

& off we went into the woods together
tho i still had to mollify his grumbling a bit as we
climbed

& tho even this local expert had to comb & scour
he did eventually spot the rock for me
pretty much just where i must have missed it at least
twice before

as you can see in the attachment
it is rather hard to see

i had to reach & stretch to touch the orange cap of
the center pipe
which rose like a periscope about 4 feet above the 4
foot rock
& on top of which i figured the tripoint must
precariously reside

& i explained this to my guide or captor or whatever
he was
who was by then warming up to the game
& he clearly got a kick out of my reaching for the
tripoint
& was by then completely disarmed

so thats how i both made my point & made good my
escape
all by means of a single improbable interaction

undaunted by the close call & cheap success
i continued on with lnpiwa
which you may also recall i have previously previewed
here
& previously counted as elusive too
tho i hadnt done more than drive past the jumpoff
point
til today

but anyway here she is again
http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4695845&e=645860&s=25&size=l&u=6&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25

the red cursor cross marks the approximate point of my
closest approach

a sore foot alone didnt stop me
tho i dont believe pain is needed for gain
so i just slowed down

nor did the mud & wet slippers alone stop me again
as they did last week

nor the mosquitoes alone
etc
but what stopped me in the end here was actually my
own cluelessness

for i was still feeling a bit rattled by having
apparently just missed my target at 460 foot range at
lnpiri
while here at lnpiwa i had already covered nearly half
of the prescribed 2900 foot bushwhack
without finding any of the hoped for blazes along lnpi

& having lost my pace count at either 400 or 500
i realized i was already reduced to wild guessing &
just bumbling along

it was then too that i noticed i was again in good old
october mountain state forest

& at that a voice said
well then i will just have to come back in october for
the retry
just as i had to come back on may day for the lelnwa
retry the last time i was at october mountain

it seemed to make perfect sense

so i suspended the try on the spot
& decided to head instead to the walmart for some new
moccasins

no footwear but refreshments at least i found there at
coltsville
where i decided it might be best under the
circumstances to just proceed with the 2 known
cakewalks that were also available in the neighborhood
dalapi & chlane
also as previoiusly previewed here
but i only got as far as addressing the former
aka the dalton lanesborough pittsfield tripoint
http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4704546&e=648265&s=50&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25
because
when i reached the rest area shown on route 8 on the
lapi line
my brakes malfunctioned severely

& so i had to suspend even these cake walk tries
& never even made the turn into gulf road
but turned about & drove directly & very carefully to
my mechanic

so i am not even going to call that a real try

& what with feet & shoes & brakes all giving out
simultaneously now
surely it is back to intermission in even greater
earnest than before

but the important difference is that the score has
turned the corner in the meantime from 18 & 9 last
week to 19 & 8 now
which means that more than 70 percent of the tripoints
that have been tried have now been completed
& the halfway mark to perfection is only 3 points away
now

so thanx for your patience & please keep standing by
but just dont hold your breath for the continuation
