1830 view of new castle waterfront suggests it had
broader tidal flats than exist today
upon which a thorofare evidently ran
http://bbs.keyhole.com/boards/showthreaded/Board-globalvillage-Number-4454-page-11-view-collapsed-sb-5-o--fpart-1.html

indeed this thorofare may well be the same as
or a successor to
the long lost
horse dyke
on which perry says the original 1701 arc was centered
& which he depicts in his figure slightly offshore in
the delaware river as of 1934
& indicates to have been situated about 2429 feet on a
bearing of about s18e from the cupola

on the following map
the court house is marked city hall
& the watercolorist would be situated just off battery
park
& probably also just south of the frame looking in
perhaps precisely upon or a bit south &or west of the
original center point
which i also make to be slightly south of this frame
in about 20 feet of water at mean sea level today
http://topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.66194&lon=-75.56667

one reason why this hypothetical point of origin still
remains so hypothetical in my mind
even with the perry data in hand
is that an alternative explanation to the abrading &
lengthening survey chain
for the regular increase in the radius of the arc
traveling west to east
is
that the true & still unknown point of origin of the
survey could actually have been situated farther to
the northeast than anyone has previously supposed
& still have been on dry land on the horse dyke as of
1701
& that the rate of abrasion & lengthening of the
chains was not nearly so great as has been previously
supposed

but i am still playing with the maths that would be
necessary to advance this idea in earnest
& thus reverse the supposed direction of the 1701
survey from counterintuitive eastbound
back to a seemingly more natural westbound

& of course a third & completely bogus center point
also exists & is shown by perry alongside the 2 real
ones
& it was created mathematically by graham in 1850 to
tie the demd arc to the depa arc via the wedge arc
but that one promises to become of interest only when
we turn to the west end of depa in pursuit of the
ghost arcs that predate his mischief
& which we can still hope hodgkins &or other
historical sources will illuminate
