The link is excellent, indeed; it describes, however, only one aspect: travelling to and from West Berlin to the Federal Republic.

At least six more aspects should not be forgotten (and they worked in many ways different and more complicated, even):

1) Travel of West Germans into the DDR; stay in the DDR; leaving the DDR (3 visa necessary and an invitation, unless on a booked tour)

2) Travel of West Berliners to East Berlin (Passierscheine etc.)

3) Travel of West Germans to East Berlin (easiest)

4) Travel of DDR citizens 0 - 60/65 years old to the West (easy for "Reisekader"; impossible for the rest)

5) Travel of DDR citizens over 60/65 to the West (only if invited)

6) Travel of foreigners to East Berlin and the DDR (funny if you were South African, for example).

Each of the 6 would deserve another website!

Wolfgang

Here is an excellent link about the East German border:

Enjoy!

(I bet it's even better if you can read German!)
