The Túnel Internacional Cristo Redentor ( photo at
http://es.geocities.com/viajesnx650/cristo.html ) on a highway under the ARCL
(Argentina-Chile) boundary in the Andes is at 3,175 meters (10,417 feet) above
sea level. The Cristo Redento monument on the boundary where the original
highway crossed the Paso Uspallata or Bermejo is reported as being 4,400 meters
(14,436 feet) in elevation (impressive photo of recent centennial ceremony at
http://www.embargentina.cl/docu/acto.htm ). Therefore, the tunnel would have to
be at least 1,225 meters below the surface, even if it was directly under the
pass. Nearby peaks rise to 6,959 meters (22,831 feet). There is an abandoned
19th-century railway tunnel that closely parallels this one.

I didn't read into the German articles about the borders in the mine
tunnels, but tunnels led me to think about the road and rail tunnels
that cross borders. It'd be interesting to know the relationships
between the depths of border markers in mines vs. in tunnels.

For example, the French - Italian border marker at ca. km 7.7 on the
road in the Mt Blanc tunnel is at about 1300 meters above sea level,
but about 2,700 meters below the Earth's surface at that point. Then
there are the Swiss - Italian tunnels Gotthard and Simplon.
