Salute,

A reader of Geo Site has left the following message in the guestbook:

"I have discovered an interesting boundary in the Torres Strait between
Australia and Papua New Guinea.

There are a few islands that are owned by Australia, and the sea around them
is also administered by Australia for fishing purposes. However, the sea
bed is administered by Papua New Guinea!

I don't know if this constitutes an Australian enclave within PNG but it is
certainly an unusual anomaly.

See http://www.dfat.gov.au/geo/torres_strait/ and
http://www.dfat.gov.au/geo/torres_strait/map.html "

---------

The first link which site belongs to the Australian Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade says (abstract):

There are two main boundaries:

i) Seabed Jurisdiction Line (shown by an unbroken line on the map)
Australia has rights to all things on or below the seabed south of this line
and Papua New Guinea has the same rights north of the line.
ii) Fisheries Jurisdiction Line (shown by a broken line on the map)
Australia has rights over swimming fish south of this line and Papua New
Guinea has the same rights north of the line.
The two countries have agreed under the Treaty to share these rights.

-------------

It seems that we finally have some kind of a different level border and
Australian exlaves?!?

Brendan?
