Not just in Europe. When Gregg and I crossed from Canada into the US
at Estcourt Station, Maine there appeared to be nobody at the US
Customs house (which I believe might have been a log cabin). So we
waited under the little carport for 5 minutes or so and then walked
around the house to see if we could find anyone. I saw the customs
officer (a young woman) in the kitchen washing dishes. When she saw
me she said "Oh, sorry, I'll be right out." She was so happy to see
other human beings that she invited us in to see her cats and
generally shoot the breeze for twenty minutes. It turns out she
lives at the customs house. She was recently discharged from the
Marines where she was stationed at Camp Pendleton just north of San
Diego. I think she is have trouble adjusting to the bright lights of
Estcourt Station.

Then on the way back into Canada a similar performance ensued. We
waited in the Canadian carport for 5 minutes or so (this time it was
a real house, and I think people live there). Gregg finally got fed
up with waiting and started looking for a doorbell, but he
accidentally pushed an alarm button that set off an incredibly loud
klaxon. This brought the customs man and his two young sons running
from the house next door where they were eating lunch with the
grandparents. They were laughing and said "Haha, everybody does
that." Haha, those crazy lovable French. Anyway, the kids were
quite interested in our "chiens" and this caused enough ruckus that
the customs officer forgot to ask us any of the normal customs
questions. Instead he gave us helpful directions for finding the
norther tip of Maine, which involves an unauthorized trip back into
the US. But this is where houses are divided by the international
boundary and people cross it to put out their trash, so I think there
was little risk of creating an international incident.
