An interesting article I just came across: http://www.iso.ch/iso/en/commcentre/pdf/Codes0004.pdf So the Former Soviet-Union should be SUHH. This is ISO 3166-3.

I always thought NOSU could be confused with Norway-Finland in the respective native languages: Norge-Suomi ... Bill

It shouldn t be confusing: according to the ISO language codes, the code for Finnish is fi. Norwegian is no. (ISO 639-1) Peter S.

Yes, the army major served at the Norwegian-Soviet border (nosu), but of course today the enlisted borders the Norwegian-Russian (noru) border. My mistyping.

I agree! What I had meant to say that NOSU always suggested Norge- Suomi in my mind...but not to be confused with ISO. Bill
