Yes, the former code for the Soviet Union (SU) has long since been
deprecated although it still lives on as a ccTLD. There has actually been a
lot of discussion about what to do with the .su domain as it should have
been deleted by now, but is still widely used in many of the former Soviet
states. I believe new registrations have are currently suspended, but there
is actually an ongoing campaign to reopen it again.

However, as there are several other ccTLDs *not* on the ISO 3166-1 list, I
guess this is a moot point.

Hence the reason for ISO 3166! This is actually one of the most useful
references for geographers, although I believe it still doesn't provide a
complete overview of all countries and territories.
