This morning I drove to Port Huron and parked near the Blue Water bridge for a few minutes. I didn't see any long truck backups, but I saw no passenger vehicles crossing. Newscasts indicate that many people are afraid that the border will close unexpectedly, and that they won't be able to get back home. A few motorists were interviewed on this evening's local Detroit TV newscasts, and they said they had no trouble crossing the Ambassador Bridge into the US. The Ontario portion of Tuesday night's early CBC-TV newscast mentioned truck backups of up to two hours at both Windsor/Detroit and Fort Erie/Buffalo NY earlier that day.

I haven't been over since the war started, but I did go over the day after the two travelers were arrested in Port Angeles, Washington after taking the ferry from Victoria BC, in December 2000. I expected long lines and loads of extra security. There were only one or two other cars at the inspection stations on the Sarnia side, and they waved me right on through after asking the usual questions. After 9-11, however, you need a picture ID (passport or driver's license) and one other document, such as a voter registration card, as proof of citizenship.
