Some additional details on the BZGT football field:
Yes, El Arenal is right near the western border at Benque Viejo del
Carmen
(Belize)/Melchor (Guatemala). It's easily accessible, and yes it
is
believed that the border runs through the field. A perfect
Borderland
story would be a Sunday afternoon football match played in the
context of
an emotional dispute over territory by the 2 nations. Also
nearby is the
illegal settlement of Juda where Guats have established a
village clearly
inside Belize territory. The Mayor of Melchor was
reported to be handing
out parcels of land to Guats to settle in Juda, and
the Guatemala Army was
patrolling the area treating Belizeans who were in the
village as illegals
entries into Guatemala. Another story in the area
is the hundreds of
Guatemalan kids from Melchor who cross the border
(legally) to go to school
in Benque.
