which will give you at least some of your answers<br/>
<br/>
in all i believe at least 6 such american tongues have been <br/>
identified so far<br/>
namely<br/>
point roberts<br/>
nw angle<br/>
elm point also in lake of woods but pointing south across 49th p<br/>
smaller unnamed tongue just west of elm point<br/>
the greater alburg vermont area<br/>
& a smaller vermont tongue called province point i believe<br/>
<br/>
& there is a unique canadian counterpart <br/>
at st regis quebec<br/>
near hogansburg ny<br/>

all 7 of these can be found pretty easily on topozone as i recall<br/>
<br/>

about the history of the nw angle<br/>
it became american territory by the treaties of 1783 & 1818<br/>
<br/>
the inclusion of the area in the usa resulted from the use of <br/>
inaccurate maps by the treaty makers<br/>
<br/>
a 1917 caus boundary commission described it as a<br/>
politico geographical curiosity<br/>
that a glance at the map will show no one could have foreseen<br/>
& that would be inexplicable without some knowledge of the <br/>
steps in the process by which it was brought about<br/>
<br/>
the 1818 treaty stated<br/>
it is agreed that a line drawn from the most northwestern point of <br/>
the lake of the woods along the 49th parallel of north latitude<br/>
or if the said point shall not be in the 49th parallel of latitude<br/>
then that a line drawn from the said point due north or south<br/>
as the case may be<br/>
until the said line shall intersect the said parallel of n lat<br/>
& from the point of such intersection due west <br/>
along & with the said parallel<br/>
shall be the line of demarcation between the usa & gb etc etc<br/>
<br/>
it wasnt until 1824 that a physical survey established the facts<br/>
& resulted in the present configuration of the boundary<br/>
<br/>
taken from boundaries of the united states & the several states<br/>
<br/>
which btw also says michigan got the np in several stages<br/>
the eastern part in 1805 <br/>
the middle in 1809 <br/>
& the west in 1818 <br/>
but with the western boundary not completed til 1836</div>
