Greetings, all!

The local CBC radio outlet (from our National public network) is heading to the mighty 49th parallel this week.  Clips, pictures and more from my little border can be found here:  http://www.vancouver.cbc.ca/690st/borders/

Also...  I am definitely going to Derby Line, Vermont and the Haskell Free Library.  I spoke with the librarian today.  I'm shooting a feature on the librarian's three kids who live and play in the divided town. She had a lot of stories, including confirmation of the Beatles story -- which I was sure was an urban legend.

The story:  the 4 Beatles were to meet in the library.  At the time, Lennon couldn't enter the USA... and there were some issues with Harrison and McCartney leaving the US.  So, they planned to meet in the reading room of the library, but planned to stay on different sides of the line.  They were discussing getting back together.  It was all set -- and then there were concerns that the public would swarm the library.  The meeting was cancelled and the rest is history.

The urban legend is that that library was modeled after an opera house in Boston.  Nope.  It is original.

I'm driving from NYC to Derby Line on Saturday Sept 14th.  Overnighting 2 nights.  Doing the story with the kids on Sunday, and then back to NYC on Monday.  So... if anyone wants to meet for a pint one night...

Cheers,

Doug
