HL:Ecuador to close key border crossing with Colombia to tighten
security

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) _ The Ecuadorean government has decided to close a
principal border crossing with Colombia at night to prevent the entry
of
drug traffickers and combatants in the latter country's civil war, a
provincial governor said Monday.

Edgar Moscoso, the governor of the Carchi province on the Colombian
border,
told reporters that the government has decided to close the Rumichaca
border
crossing from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Sept. 1. The Rumichaca
crossing
connects Tulcan, Ecuador, with Ipiales, Colombia.

The night-time closure will run until mid-October on a trial basis,
Moscoso
said.

Ecuador and Colombia share a 640-kilometre border that runs from the
Pacific
coast across the Andes Mountains and deep into the Amazon jungle.
