Vietnam, China Continues Border Marking
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[CND, 07/28/02] The third marker stone on the newly agreed border
between China and Vietnam was laid on Friday at a ceremony attended by
dignitaries from both sides, AFP reported.
The marker was located at the Thanh Thuy border gate in Vietnam's
central province of Ha Giang, neighboring China's Yunnan province.
Vietnam's chief negotiator, deputy minister Le Cong Phung, and
provincial official from Yunnan attended the ceremony.
"This will lay a solid foundation for the building of a friendly,
stable and long-lasting borderline between Vietnam and China ... and
create favorable conditions for beginning the demarcation of the
entire Vietnam-China border in early September," said the Vietnamese
negotiator.
This is the third of over 1,500 markers that will be laid in the next
three years to mark the 1,350-kilometer border. The two countries
negotiated for eight years to reach the agreement. (Dong LIU)
