Hi again,

here are some maps of Steinstücken. I gather the situation is familiar to
some people, but maybe not some of the details I'll describe.

The first map is from 1950. This is the original situation. The boundary
was this way between 1920 (establishment of "Greater Berlin") and 1972
(first territorial exchange between East Germany and West Berlin). The
origin of the enclave is the fact that the village of Stolpe (visible on
the map to the north on the banks of lake Stölpchensee) used to cultivate
crop fields outside its own territory for centuries, which hence became
part of its municipality. When Stolpe was to become part of Greater Berlin,
the enclave went with it.

Even though it stayed the same, the boundary changed its nature several
times during this period: Between 1920 and 1945 it was the boundary of the
municipality of Berlin, nothing else. In 1945 it became the border between
the Soviet occupation zone of Germany, and the four-power occupation zone
of Berlin, in this location with its American sector. In 1949 it became the
border between DDR and West Berlin, still open at this point. After 1961
same, but with wall.

The second map is from 1975. This is the situation since 1972, when the
first agreement of territorial exchanges was reached, until today. Again,
it changed its nature though: 1972 - 1989 East/West with wall, 1989 - 1990
still East/West, but no more wall, 1990 - today: state border between the
Länder of Berlin and Brandenburg.

In the post war years, East Germany tried to annex Steinstücken one time,
but ultimately failed. Otherwhise, in the post war years until 1952, it was
still fairly easy to get in and out, since there was still free movement
across the border. After 1952, West Berliners were not allowed to enter
East Germany at all. So Steinstücken couldn't get visitors, nor could they
visit Eastern neighbours. The only people allowed to get into Steinstücken
were the inhabitants by special permits. American military had access via
helicopter (thus today there's a "helicopter memorial" there).

After 1972 when the road corridor was opened, anyone from West Berlin had
access, Steinstücken became a minor tourist attraction with a café and
souvenir stands ... Since the road had the border on both side, it also had
the wall on both sides, just a narrow corridor. There was a bus line with
double deckers going through. From the top deck you could peek across the
border.

Map no. 3 shows Eiskeller, situation about 1960s. Eiskeller is an Eastern
enclave surrounded by a Western peninsula-near enclave.

More about enclaves: Berlin used to have 11 enclaves. As explained, they
existed since 1920 when nobody knew there would be an East West division
many years later. It so happens that all of these enclaves belonged either
to the borough of Spandau (later UK sector) or Zehlendorf (later US
sector). So they all became islands of the West in East Germany.
Steinstücken was the only one with permanant inhabitants though.

But today none remain, since all enclaves have been removed in territorial
exchanges, which were agreed in 1972 and 1988. Some enclaves were connected
to West Berlin via corridor, some others were annexed into East Germany.
The territorial exchanges also included some other border changes not
connected to enclaves.

OK, Here's a list compiled by me of the former enclaves, short description
and date of removal. The list is in German, I'll translate later it if
there's a public outcry :).

Ost-Exklave(n?)
===============
1972 an Berlin

List no. 2 contains the other border corrections not connected to enclaves.
Again in German.
