half moon bay ca
day 7

harry
i think your first comprehensive extremity tour or what i called rainbow try
of nederland is complete even without a photo of nle since the artifacts
arent what matter but the experience
& clearly you have at least a great first approximation of it
so i dont think there will be any other ensemble nominations this year since
you would win hands down

indeed i am staggered to think what it would take to do the same for
california even with caw & cas already in the bag if not in the can for i
cant even find can since it is one of those hard to figure points like ors
etc etc

& again please excuse the disjointedness of my communications since i am
moving at high speed & handicap

now as for the conclusion of alsasast
the recent heavy rains had left a thick layer of mud fudge under the crisp
icing
so i could already foresee that some additional degree of difficulty lay
ahead
& as i forced my way up mocho canyon into the face of the sun i was already
luxuriating in resistance

the approach pretty much had to be from the pavement in this canyon on the
west shoulder of mount boardman since del puerto canyon to the south was too
far distant while to the east & north lay the even longer emptier slopes
down to the san joaquin valley

from here at least i would have under 10 miles of mudslick to drive &or walk

so when my best hope of approach via tarraville creek at 2339 feet bottomed
out with a typically locked gate & barbed wire
& when my next best hope via smith gulch at 2470 feet was merely cordoned
off to exclude vehicular traffic i figured i was in luck to even find this
access & a parking spot with it & so headed up smith gulch on foot for what
would have been a 3 mile crowfly due east to the target at 3593 feet

but after only half a mile i encountered the usual locked gate with a
heavier than usual fortification of barbed wire & warning signs etc

a final try by turning up turner gulch at 2700 feet met dangerous mudslick &
similar fate with barking watchdogs & an owner who had never even heard of
mt boardman

so i continued south up mocho canyon looking over my left shoulder thru
patchy fogbanks for any glimpse at the peak now receding from my approach
more than 3 miles to the northeast until finally i did get a panoramic view
of the entire crest to the east which rose northward from del puerto canyon
& i guessed boardman might be the first north of the del puerto gap tho that
peak later proved to be red mountain while boardman i later learned was
actually the third in line then visible & hence i was probably then looking
at a retroactive class d visit

but i was able to keep climbing from there until the real treat came atop mt
hamilton where at 4213 feet but only 20 miles from the sea i could see &
identify boardman & all the other features clearly enough thru spotty clouds
tho more than 10 miles away

in the descent to san jose the dreamscape vanished tho i did later in the
afternoon pass yahoo headquarters
