i have been wondering about all this

it seems to me the antarctic treaty in 1959 actually neutralized

or everyoneized if you will

not just antarctica but all lands & seas everywhere from lat s60 southward

so even tho eezs & shelf claims & explicitly everyoneized high seas & all the rest of modern maritime law didnt yet exist at that time

it is nevertheless just as if everyones land already had territorial seas of not just 12nm but up to several hundreds of nm all the way from its antarctic territorial base north to lat s60

so i have a hard time ignoring the antarctic treaty & thinking of the greater antarctic region as a potential eez island when it already seems or rather is an everyonese sovereign territory as far north as lat s60 nor do i believe anyone here is seriously expecting me to ignore this & think that

& since everyones land has not been empowered by unclos as the regular countries have been to project eezs or shelf claims beyond that lat s60 line or anywhere at all for that matter still when the regular countries empowered themselves to claim eezs & shelves everyones land was given something much better namely the lions share of the remaining high seas

now my maps are primitive as usual but there does appear to be at least one place in the world where the antarctic & maritime regimes are in conflict so it will make at least a good research & test case & this is an island or group of unknown name & probably argentine or chilean ownership in drake passage at about long w70 & lat s58 or in other words only about 120nm north of lat s60

indeed i can find no other islands in the world less than 200nm north of lat s60 or in other words between lats s56d40m & s60 tho it is hard to believe no others exist

anyway the question for this island or group & for any others in this critical 3d20m or 200 minutes of lat or 200nm band is

what happens to their eez claim when it reaches lat s60

presumably any such or any other sovereign rights claims are curtailed & overridden right there at & by lat s60 since the antarctic treaty precedes the unclos convention

but if all eez & shelf claims are carved out of the sovereign territorial seas of everyones land in any case how can an interruption of one kind of sovereign everyones land by another kind of sovereign everyones land possibly cause these claims to stop short or become invalid

my answer is this interruption cant reasonably be expected to stop them but it probably will stop them

thanx only to the prevailing respect for legal precedence

but if the regular countries do respect the sovereignty or dignity that they have accorded to our antarctic human heritage area then why dont they also respect the identical sovereignty or dignity that they have subsequently accorded to our high seas human heritage area

& suspend not only a part of the otherwise rightful eez of this funny island in drake passage but the entirety of all eez & shelf claims everywhere in the world effective immediately

evidently there is no reason why they dont & they wont even see the inconsistency of their position

& upon such an obvious absurdity & catch 22 as this may ride the greatest hope for our just cause of everyonese irredentism all the way back to the 12nm limits of the territorial seas of the rest of the world if not farther
