The place was
established in 1914 as an unofficial "free state" by Norwegian and Swedish peace
organisations. They rised also a huge 18 meters high monument for 100 years of
Norwegian and Swedish peaceful co-existence.
From
the (Swedish) Morokulien post office it was (is?) possible to send letters etc.
partly with Swedish stamps and partly with Norwegian stamps. "Moro" (Norw.) =
"fun"; "Kul" (Swed.) = fun". Morokulien was established in 1959 after a
radio show initiative ("Over alle grenser").
Officially the unpopulated place is located on both sides of the border
of Eidskog municipality (NO) and Eda (?) municipality
(SE).
Norwegian and
Swedish (as well as other Nordic) citizens can freely pass the
border without bringing their passports, as whereever within the five
Nordic countries.
Sweden
and Norway have both allocated special amateur radio prefixes for
Morokulien.
