not at all
the man was trying to put it back on exactly backwards
& that is why he was laughing

it wasnt only a prank tho
but was also intended to alert future pilgrims that there might be
something unusual going on here & thus lead them to try the cover
plate & hopefully arrive at the truth

tripoint markers in paved roads generally get asphalted into or just
below grade
