I know you're all losing sleep over this one, so here's the definitive
scoop on the US nautical mile.
In 1929 a conference in Monaco defined the "international nautical
mile" as *exactly* 1852m. In 1954, this measurement was adopted by the
US, but for ready reference the exact figure in metres was converted
to feet, with the decimals extended as far as anyone felt it necessary
to go: 6076.11549ft, rounded to the nearest couple of microns.
So exact metres, approximate feet.
Now we can all rest easy.
