European place names are dime a dozen in New York
State as well as in many of the other States. I
live in Lewis County, NY, a large but relatively
unpopulated county. Within a 20 mile radius here
are some town and villages that surround Beaver
Falls where I live: Belfort, Copenhagen, Denmark,
Naumburg, New Bremen, Port Leyden and Turin.

There are always odd concentrations of names. To find
odd names all over the United States, I urge you to
look at the book "All over the Map" and its sequel.
By the way, my college and nearby has a concentration
of Roman (mixed with a few greek, I believe) names.
There are Homer, Ithaca, Romulus, Ulysses, Rome etc,
not to exclude Syracuse. I am wondering if Binghamton
is a Roman name or not.
By the way, the four postal cities of Queens are the
cities of Queens before they joined. That happened
before Queens ended up joining NYC.
Also, I have a question to whoever lives in Fairfax
county (forgive me for forgetting who). I was looking
at the Fairfax orthophoto site
http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/scripts/esrimap.dll?name=ortho2&cmd=init
and noticed they show a boundary within Fairfax City.
Though the site do show other non-county boundaries,
my curiosity was raised. I looked at an Atlas I
borrowed from the library and it seems like some
County courthouses are in there. So, what's the deal?
Is it county buildings which are outside the county
as Fairfax City is separate or is it an enclave.
Arif
