the entire boundary of dc was surveyed in 1791 & was marked with sandstone <br/>
mileposts in 1792<br/>

these mileposts except for those at the 4 corners of the original 10mile <br/>
diamond were numbered clockwise from 1 to 9 on each of the 4 sides<br/>
<br/>
in 1903 additional marks were placed on the dcmd line at road crossings & <br/>
other prominent points<br/>
<br/>
in 1915 thru 1921 each of the original boundary stones was surrounded by an <br/>
iron fence erected by the dc & va chapters of the dar<br/>
<br/>
<br/>
of all these i have seen only the original or south corner stone recently<br/>
but have also recently heard that many tho not all the other mileposts & <br/>
corners are still in place<br/>
& i believe andrew has also recently reported that a renovation of the south <br/>
corner & other stones is now under way<br/>
