bus&ss p91 says
the entire boundary of dc was surveyed in 1791 & was marked with sandstone
mileposts in 1792
these mileposts except for those at the 4 corners of the original 10mile
diamond were numbered clockwise from 1 to 9 on each of the 4 sides
in 1903 additional marks were placed on the dcmd line at road crossings &
other prominent points
in 1915 thru 1921 each of the original boundary stones was surrounded by an
iron fence erected by the dc & va chapters of the dar
of all these i have seen only the original or south corner stone recently
but have also recently heard that many tho not all the other mileposts &
corners are still in place
& i believe andrew has also recently reported that a renovation of the south
corner & other stones is now under way
