I have received a fact-sheet from The French National Geographical Institute
on how they made the calculations of the centre of Europe. The copy was not
able to scan, so I typewrote all the text and published it on
http://www.litauen-nytt.org/prosjekter/geo_europe.htm (there might be
misspellings!) Further I auto-translated it according to a tip from Harry on
http://babelfish.altavista.com and got the result as enclosed.
As I am not speaking French, maybe somebody of you can check the translation
(it may include some funny parts). I have in mind, if I get permission from
the IGN, to publish this English text on my GeoSite.

According to the paper, the IGN recognises the Canary Is. as a part of
Europe. (I would say they clearly are a part of Africa?!)
They have also omitted Novaja Zemla of Russia and Malta, but included the
Norwegian Svalbard Is.

I also received an 11 page technical text (on paper) "Les centres de la
France ... et d'ailleurs: aspects techniques et médiatiques" (which is not
translated). If somebody is interessted in a copy, please contact me!
