Celebrate Terminilia - The Festival of Boundary Stones The Romans
had a god named Terminus. He was the god of Boundary Stones.
On
February 23rd ( the end of the Roman year ), a festival called TERMINILIA
celebrating boundary stones, i.e. monuments ( not the god Terminus ) was
held. The owners of adjacent lands gathered at the common boundary stone
and each garlanded his own side on the stone. An altar was set up and
offerings of cake, honey, and wine were made. The proceedings closed with
songs to the gods and merrymaking, in which all members of the family and
the servants took part.
Surveying has certainly changed through the
centuries ! In ancient Roman times a formal ceremony was held which
consisted of the setting of boundary stone or marker. A special ceremonial
fire was lighted. A hole was dug for the boundary stone. Special offerings
including incense, wine, fruit, and honey were placed in the hole. Then
the boundary stone, which had been previously anointed and crowned with
garlands, was placed over the offerings and fixed in the
ground.
Boundary stones were very important and respected. Anyone
who removed a boundary stone was accursed and might be slain by the
property owner without fear of punishment. While this type of monument
protection in not needed today, it would be nice if people would better
protect and respect survey monuments.
