An
interesting book about the DMZ was just published this year. You all might
want to take a look at it. It gives an interesting history, talks about
problems, maintenance, has photos, etc. Here's the
reference:
Kim,
Chae-Han (ed.) 2001. The Korean DMZ: Reverting Beyond Division.
Seoul: Sowha Publishing.
A
friend of mine picked it up for me in Seoul, but it might be availabe from
Amazon or some other source as well. I haven't checked.
Incidentally, I am hoping to get to North Korea next
May or June and have been in communication with a tour company that works with
Koryo Tours on trips to NK. US citizens apparently will very likely be
permitted to travel to North Korea sometime next year on a regular basis,
although this is tentative. Talks are still under way between Pyongyong
and Washington about establishing a quasi-diplomatic 'USA Center' there.
This will be a major break in current regulations and might give some of us a
unique opportunity. I'll still use my Canadian passport though--I always
carry both just in case!
