halftime intermission enthusiasts at least will
rejoice to learn i still havent bagged the single wet
& probably most demanding 23rd berkshire tripoint
& thus my overall ensemble try & score remain stalled
at 22 down & 22 to go

part of the difficulty here is that the tripoint
location shown by the usgs topo as unmarked circa 1991
http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4697586&e=636671&s=24&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25
differs substantially from the location of the marker
shown in the local border bible circa 1915
of which a xerox copy is attached

the biblical text also specifies
the tripoint is marked by a stone monument sunk in the
mud in the bottom of a small pond
situated near its easterly end 95 feet west of the dam
with an inch & a half pipe attached to & surmounting
the marker for a finder
which shows above the water except at its highest
stage

& i still havent spotted either of these features
protruding from the bed

i make these 2 most prospective positions out to be
some 50 feet apart

probably still farther off are the positions shown in
2 other dated topos

of course ponds just like streams reserve the right to
move about a bit

so all of that is still neither here nor there
so to say

the try has also been stalled because in fact nothing
of the described assemblage is visible at all
even in times of very slack water after several months
of drought

i expected i would find the water level even lower
today than the previous low observed at the time of
the previous visit a few weeks ago
but was surprised to realize today that the pond must
be spring fed
& thus had already reached its essentially lowest
point some time ago
hahaha
so i have been so patiently waiting for nothing all
this time

indeed the pond bed a few inches below the water
surface was much more visible & readable at the
previous visit in direct sunlight than it was today in
a misty drizzle

so not much was positively accomplished this time at
all
except that i was forced to conclude my next try will
have to be with both some means of flotation & a
probing iron
since the bed wasnt hard enough nor my rake long
enough to make much of a dent in the still rather
large portion of the target area not yet reached or
scoured

& unless i can bag this probably most challenging one
of the set of 44
there is little point in my ever emerging from
halftime intermission
since this ensemble try was expressly designed as a
test for perfection

for unlike the european 44 or the japansese 44
the berkshire 44 are all believed to be directly
monumented

but we shall see how long i can remain satisfied with
half of perfection
