while i take a few days to recover from our recent
7try weekend in the berkshires
& also to prepare to revisit pittsfield for the
necessary border bible consultation mentioned in my
previous report
before deciding to either resume or abandon my overall
berkshire perfection ensemble try
&
while we also continue to wait expectantly for any
word from gseebe & the other actually multidimensional
tries that are believed to be possibly even
simultaneously in progress
& or any proxy or surrogate quests in progress for
that matter too
it is my extreme pleasure to try to recount to you as
fully as possible the tries jc & i made for the
hinsdale peru windsor tripoint only yesterday
& for the twice previously promised dalton hinsdale
washington tripoint on the day before

& since dahiwa is already showing signs of improving
with age
& since freshness of reportage is otherwise generally
to be favored
i will begin with hipewi
http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4706068&e=658790&s=50&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25
from where you may recall i promptly flashed only
yesterday this attached pic of jc physically
reconstructing the lost & dilapidated & likely
forgotten monument

the try began from new salem in light rain
with the overriding & overweening ambition of
following hipewi directly with dapiwa lepiwa lepiri &
hapiri
& of thus bringing the overall berkshire try up to
halftime with a score of 22 down & 5 up with 17 left
for 44 right

& the first order of play was to try to banish or
somehow compensate for the gloomy & increasingly moist
prevailing conditions
which you may also recall included the already ominous
necessity of at least checking out the potentially &
now actually show stopping hapiri wetpoint or
softpoint

but the approach to hipewi necessarily included
waterproofing the sortie with whatever plastic &
headgear we could
& just hoping my regular slogging moccasins would hold
up
etc
which they soon didnt

but we sallied forth from the truck into the rain
merrily enough at the 614m elevation point on crane
road indicated on the above topo about 3quarters of a
mile nw of the objective

& we hiked south on the 4wd trail
past its barricaded intersection with the other 4wd
trail shown
& straight on up the hill while absorbing a good deal
of moisture
& hoping almost against hope in such wilderness that
the hiwi town line might be blazed & viable

& on both the exact pace count & topological match
point we found to our surprise & delight an even more
heavily festooned lead line than we had any reason to
expect
comprising 3 distinct sorts of very insistent traces

so it was immediately off into fairly impenetrable &
exceedingly juicy woods
where after many fits & starts but at approximately
the correct pace count the blazes crescendoed &
suddenly stopped at a humble modern concrete marker
with red herring inscription dwd or something
which i imagined meant dalton water district
or maybe it was pwp
for peru something or other
but not really a satisfactory 3town rock in the grand
berkshire tradition

& it reminded me disturbingly of the not very serious
pseudo lerist marker which you may recall only
momentarily distracted & slowed me down a couple of
weeks ago less than halfway on a supposed lead line to
the objective in that case

but in this case the blazes stopped in the right
general neighborhood
& i like to imagine the rock was slightly more
plausible too
& my slippers & feet were already somewhat in tatters
so i popped the camera on yet another marker not
worthy of your attention
hahaha
i am almost ashamed to say
hahahahaha
& was ready to call it a day & hobble barefoot back to
the truck
hahaha
when jc
who had been wondering & studying how i sometimes do
manage to pull a stunning old monument out of
apparently thin air
said
wait
youre not turning back now
for she knew my pace count wasnt overgenerous
& i looked at her like
gimme a break
thats the freakin rock
& she said
i am going to look a short distance ahead anyway
& i said be my guest
as i rested there uneasily on my supposed laurels
& waited impatiently for her to complete her presumed
folly
when she called back from about 50 yards into the
gloomy woods
ive got it
better come on & get it

so i hobble assed on over there
& sure enough
an undressed 18th century beauty stuck between a
couple of trees that were uprooting & overturning &
fracturing her

& jc pointed first to the h for hinsdale chiseled near
the base of one of the triangular faces & to the w for
windsor chiseled near the base of another & then
picked up a loose fragment containing the letter p for
peru which in the pic she is fitting back into the
mother rock at the base of the third face

btw it is generally a good policy to restore
monumentation as much as reasonably possible & resist
the temptation to take souvenirs
hahahaha

& i should probably add at this point that in a way i
wasnt all that astonished either by this otherwise
truly remarkable discovery
because jc aka janey styles herself as the
reincarnation of sacajawea too
& i had a hunch i was playing the sap in this scenario
from the start anyway

& then i noticed we were in a completely undisturbed &
especially dark & thick little copse there generally
surrounded by slightly more open woods
& that indeed none of the 3 distinct sorts of bright
festoons & blazes we had been following for more than
half a mile had continued past the pseudo hipewi
marker that had fooled me
& nothing but gloom penetrated into the copse
as you can see in the pic

so i have to imagine that the true hipewi may have
eluded at least some of the blazermakers too
& been truly lost in action to at least some if not
all intents & purposes for some period of time

the recessional & self rescue of the walking happy but
wet & wounded included getting a bit lost & puzzled &
my pulling a topological solution out of the hat

which impressed jc
who was also looking forward to getting back under
cover asap
as much as her rock finding had impressed me
& suggests we make a good combo

now i hasten also to add that all of my complaints are
superficial & of course not actually complaints at all
since true adventurers cant & dont complain
but i would say drawing a minimal amount of blood like
this may be quintessential & indispensable for any
truly extreme undertaking to be deemed a success
with the proviso that it be the less blood the better
which this was

but it slowed me down enough to blow off all further
pursuit on foot for the rest of the day & perhaps for
a few more days to come

which is a second & quite independent cause for my
sudden if temporary suspension of activity in the
berkshires

so maybe i will save my tale of dahiwa for tomorrow &
thus deliberately age it as well as recreate myself
for 1 more day
before returning to pittsfield for some more truth
