but i decided it would be better to try them in<br/>
separate approaches from opposite directions<br/>

& i tried grlety first because she had impressed me as<br/>
the easier of the 2 when i first scoped them both out<br/>
from the road on sunday<br/>
& i felt i needed a quick success on the first try<br/>
just for the sake of building momentum<br/>
if i was really going to try for all 7 in a single day<br/>
<br/>
nor was i disappointed<br/>
tho my expectation of bushwhacking directly up from<br/>
jerusalem road on a pink ribboned lety line was<br/>
quickly dashed when the blazes quit about a quarter of<br/>
the way to the target<br/>
<br/>
however i had also been noticing what seemed to be a<br/>
roughly parallel pink ribbon line about 40 yards<br/>
eastward of lety <br/>
& i was able to switch over to it & follow it instead<br/>
at that point<br/>
until i got about 3 quarters of the way to the goal<br/>
when i caught sight of what seemed to be a resumption<br/>
of the original blaze line <br/>
so i switched back over to it for the last part of the<br/>
climb<br/>
<br/>
this experience underscored a useful fact i had been<br/>
observing lately<br/>
which is that border perambulators evidently do not<br/>
always use their tapes to mark the town lines directly<br/>
<br/>
but they are also just as likely to use them to mark<br/>
an access route to a marker without necessarily<br/>
following any town line<br/>
<br/>
or at least thats what this peculiar offset seemed to<br/>
be indicating here<br/>
<br/>
for at the expected location i found not just 1 but 2<br/>
tripoint rocks <br/>
a few feet apart<br/>
a mid 19th century model & an early 20th<br/>
& both of them had been knocked over & partly obscured<br/>
by fallen trees<br/>
evidently at 2 different times<br/>
in still further possible explanation for the<br/>
disappearance of lelnwa <br/>
<br/>
i dont know if you will even be able to see the<br/>
markers <br/>
both slouching toward the top center of the attached<br/>
photo <br/>
<br/>
once again <br/>
i imagine the tripoint position must have moved a few<br/>
feet <br/>
just as i imagined it must have done at grlest<br/>
presumably from the base of the senior to the base of<br/>
the junior rock in both cases<br/>
<br/>
interestingly too a small brook trickles right past<br/>
the markers<br/>
from a spring just above them<br/>
& i was able to drink from within a foot or 2 of their<br/>
feet<br/>
tho i doubt you will be able to see it sparkling in<br/>
the pic<br/>
<br/>
it was quite a satisfying & encouraging beginning for<br/>
the day<br/>
& so directly i drove on around to beartown mountain<br/>
road for the sequel try<br/>
& was just starting the hike up the sky hill trail<br/>
toward grmoty by 9am <br/>
still with high hopes of scoring the full hebdobopper<br/>
as i was already thinking of naming it<br/>
when i flushed a lone turkey<br/>
oops<br/>
& maybe that should have told me something was up<br/>
<br/>
for not long after that & just below the word<br/>
tyringham on the topo<br/>
i left the trail & began bushwhacking due west toward<br/>
the target<br/>
& soon counted myself most of the way there<br/>
when i found the intended approach route swamped by<br/>
beavers<br/>
who had dammed the brook that falls into bear swamp<br/>
<br/>
& tho i managed to encircle & eyeball their entire<br/>
series of ponds & wetlands<br/>
i soon had to admit i was relatively lost & without a<br/>
real clue for the tripoint try<br/>
<br/>
& which even left me wondering whether it was a dry or<br/>
a wet tripoint <br/>
tho it doesnt appear on the topo to be in a<br/>
submersible location<br/>
<br/>
& because everything was so disorienting as well as so<br/>
remote & solitary<br/>
i finally thought it best to return to civilization<br/>
while i still figured i could<br/>
& before getting even more lost & disoriented<br/>
& to hope for some better clues from the border bible<br/>
etc for another retry<br/>
tho at this point i have to say <br/>
grmoty is looking like a second reason to buy a gps<br/>
receiver<br/>

next i headed back to great barrington but found the<br/>
library closed<br/>
so i continued on for a retry of aleggr<br/>
of which you may recall i recently flashed this<br/>
conflicted topo & aerial pic<br/>

but did make a new topographically inspired try<br/>
skirting a large flock of sheep on the knoll<br/>
& even managed to fool myself enough to take a bogus<br/>
picture <br/>
of an iron pipe yet<br/>
tho i am expecting all the berkshire tripoints to be<br/>
marked by stones<br/>

& i will not be showing off the pipe now that i have<br/>
checked the bible<br/>
<br/>
& tho i also crept right up to & almost into some<br/>
pretty rich digs<br/>
on the grounds of which i now believe the tripoint<br/>
must be hiding<br/>
i have come up empty handed here once again<br/>
<br/>
so make that 3 candidates for gps recovery<br/>
tho this one may need permission or help from the home<br/>
owner as well<br/>

& by the time i got back to the library in great<br/>
barrington<br/>
& found no help in the bible but just some no longer<br/>
recognizable 90 year old schematics & the rock<br/>
confirmations for both grmoty & aleggr<br/>
it was nap time for me<br/>

so the 4 new points were never even tried<br/>
<br/>
& that makes 13 down plus 3 tough nuts <br/>
with 28 left to try from scratch<br/>
