aeeoooo in a word

or in more detail
here again but on a single map frame now
since they are less than a mile & a half apart
are
grlety
situated to the northeast of bear swamp
& grmoty
situated to the southwest of bear swamp
http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4678772&e=644251&s=50&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25
but i decided it would be better to try them in
separate approaches from opposite directions

& i tried grlety first because she had impressed me as
the easier of the 2 when i first scoped them both out
from the road on sunday
& i felt i needed a quick success on the first try
just for the sake of building momentum
if i was really going to try for all 7 in a single day

nor was i disappointed
tho my expectation of bushwhacking directly up from
jerusalem road on a pink ribboned lety line was
quickly dashed when the blazes quit about a quarter of
the way to the target

however i had also been noticing what seemed to be a
roughly parallel pink ribbon line about 40 yards
eastward of lety
& i was able to switch over to it & follow it instead
at that point
until i got about 3 quarters of the way to the goal
when i caught sight of what seemed to be a resumption
of the original blaze line
so i switched back over to it for the last part of the
climb

this experience underscored a useful fact i had been
observing lately
which is that border perambulators evidently do not
always use their tapes to mark the town lines directly

but they are also just as likely to use them to mark
an access route to a marker without necessarily
following any town line

or at least thats what this peculiar offset seemed to
be indicating here

for at the expected location i found not just 1 but 2
tripoint rocks
a few feet apart
a mid 19th century model & an early 20th
& both of them had been knocked over & partly obscured
by fallen trees
evidently at 2 different times
in still further possible explanation for the
disappearance of lelnwa

i dont know if you will even be able to see the
markers
both slouching toward the top center of the attached
photo

once again
i imagine the tripoint position must have moved a few
feet
just as i imagined it must have done at grlest
presumably from the base of the senior to the base of
the junior rock in both cases

interestingly too a small brook trickles right past
the markers
from a spring just above them
& i was able to drink from within a foot or 2 of their
feet
tho i doubt you will be able to see it sparkling in
the pic

it was quite a satisfying & encouraging beginning for
the day
& so directly i drove on around to beartown mountain
road for the sequel try
& was just starting the hike up the sky hill trail
toward grmoty by 9am
still with high hopes of scoring the full hebdobopper
as i was already thinking of naming it
when i flushed a lone turkey
oops
& maybe that should have told me something was up

for not long after that & just below the word
tyringham on the topo
i left the trail & began bushwhacking due west toward
the target
& soon counted myself most of the way there
when i found the intended approach route swamped by
beavers
who had dammed the brook that falls into bear swamp

& tho i managed to encircle & eyeball their entire
series of ponds & wetlands
i soon had to admit i was relatively lost & without a
real clue for the tripoint try

& which even left me wondering whether it was a dry or
a wet tripoint
tho it doesnt appear on the topo to be in a
submersible location

& because everything was so disorienting as well as so
remote & solitary
i finally thought it best to return to civilization
while i still figured i could
& before getting even more lost & disoriented
& to hope for some better clues from the border bible
etc for another retry
tho at this point i have to say
grmoty is looking like a second reason to buy a gps
receiver

next i headed back to great barrington but found the
library closed
so i continued on for a retry of aleggr
of which you may recall i recently flashed this
conflicted topo & aerial pic
http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=11&Z=18&X=1577&Y=11686&W=1&qs=%7ctyringham%7cma%7c

& i wasnt really helped directly by the additional
data in the pic
but did make a new topographically inspired try
skirting a large flock of sheep on the knoll
& even managed to fool myself enough to take a bogus
picture
of an iron pipe yet
tho i am expecting all the berkshire tripoints to be
marked by stones

& i will not be showing off the pipe now that i have
checked the bible

& tho i also crept right up to & almost into some
pretty rich digs
on the grounds of which i now believe the tripoint
must be hiding
i have come up empty handed here once again

so make that 3 candidates for gps recovery
tho this one may need permission or help from the home
owner as well

& by the time i got back to the library in great
barrington
& found no help in the bible but just some no longer
recognizable 90 year old schematics & the rock
confirmations for both grmoty & aleggr
it was nap time for me

so the 4 new points were never even tried

& that makes 13 down plus 3 tough nuts
with 28 left to try from scratch
