just made half a dozen approaches from all different
directions
but without even getting very close at all yet to my
objective
which was & still is the tripoint of the berkshire
towns of egremont & mt washington & sheffield
or in long shorthand us2ma3be4egshmw
tho i must say it is looking much more like a
quadripoint than a tripoint here at the upper center
of this map
http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4663600&e=629877&s=50&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25
but that is only because the state forest boundary
also evidently passes straight thru the tripoint
marker

& 3 town lines plus 1 overlapping forest boundary
still dont quite add up to a true megapoint
do they
any more than a mountain of cyclopedism adds up to a
real point try

but anyway
a first probe & try were made to ascend the mt riga or
mt washington massif from the south end in salisbury
connecticut
by the dirt road probably familiar to anyone who has
visited the ctmany tristate point
& all as shown in this zoom out view at bottom center
http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4663600.00011842&e=629877.000003922&datum=nad83
but the way was still blocked by the winter barricade

so a second try was made from salisbury
but on the undermountain road aka route 41 this time
& reached berkshire school in sheffield
which is shown just southeast of the tripoint on the
first map
& where much later i got off the attached only best &
parting shot
just as the sun began to drop behind the mountain
& which does at least show the tripoint ridge as a
slight bulge just to the left of the peak

so maybe my visit is already a class d as in distant
rather than class e as in elusive
if i am very generous to myself
& why not be

but on this first visit to the school beneath the
tripoint
i decided it would be easier to circle around the
mountain to the north almost as far as south egremont
village in the zoom out map
& then up & over the mountain to the west
from where i figured i could just amble over to the
tripoint a lot more easily than scrambling up to it
from the school

& so i backed off & continued circling behind the
mountain
where for my third try
i was finally inspired to ditch the car
at the trailhead on the street shown at left center
& to head up that trail on foot
with just a black & white copy of this map in hand
thinking i had struck on the best & easiest way in

it promised to be less than a 2 mile ramble with a
minimal bushwhack
but the old unblazed trail soon petered out into
deadly thickets of mountain laurel

& the potential replacement trail
which deflected slightly & climbed too much
was still only a line of fresh blazes
surreally offering no passageway at all yet thru the
tangled woods

so i had to turn back & circle still more to the south
on the street
to come in via the mt everett aka mt washington state
reservation road at lower left
for a 4th try

but it too was barricaded

so i parked again there & walked up the road toward
the lookout tower
for what was now promising to be a 4 mile hike
one way

& after several more probes into the woods
i unexpectedly reached guilder pond
where i realized i wasnt going to make it in & out
before nightfall
& so suspended the try at that otherwise highly
gratifying location

& then repaired to the great barrington library to at
least consult the local boundary bible & get an idea
of what i still had to look forward to

it said
a dressed granite monument doweled to the ledge & set
in cement marked
es 1914 mw
situated on the top of a wooded ridge about 700 feet
northerly from a wood road
etc etc

but on the way back to cream hill
i had another chance to pass by the school again
where
after taking that pic
i was also able to make an additional & final probe
just to see how far one can drive straight up the
mountain on the maintenance road
& it was surprisingly far up the dashed line shown on
the map
before i was forced to stop

at a beautiful pool beneath a tall cascade

so
at this point i am not even really sure which
direction i should resume the try from

i think for starters or restarters i will just wait
til they open the state reservation road
probably any day now
& then head back up to guilder pond
where i can hope to set off on the trail that skirts
mt undine to the east
& zigzags ultimately to within a few hundred yards of
the target

i mean of course if everything is still there as shown
on the map
