>the cia world factbook is good for starters

The CIA Factbook is a fairly decent reference, but it does contain
inaccuracies and omissions. For example, it makes no mention of any of the
national Antarctic territories, despite the fact that these palpably do
exist in an administrative sense, even if they're not internationally
recognised. It is also sometimes ambiguous about which territorial
divisions certain referenced islands fall under (e.g. the Îles Éparses),
nor does it describe the relationship between certain territories and their
parent countries (and by extension the EU) particularly well.
