this message gratefully dedicated to all who have come before on this topic
especially mike & kevin & doc

jc & i visited the northeast & southwest & north vertices of the octagon
as shown by usgs
& found them not obviously marked
tho there was a wine cork puller stuck in the ground that i initially mistook for an exotic marker
& which fooled me enough to actually photograph it
hahaha
& then an old tire that was sculpted into a decorative planting bed got my hopes up
& next an undressed blocky rock
etc
etc
but had to conclude the 8 vertices are most likely not durably monumented
at least not in any really demonstrative way
as these 3 corners at least certainly appeared to have no marker types in common

i did however find an old map here in sussex library tho
that shows the vertices about 100 feet offset from the usgs positions
yikes
so perhaps there is still something left to check here
not only at the 5 remote vertex positions i didnt check
which could still have undisturbed markers marking them
but also at the 3 roadside vertices i did presume to have exhausted

perhaps more interestingly tho
we found a fountain at the central square called fountain square dedicated 1902
which i later learned is also the year of the incorporation & octagonization of the town of deckertown into the boro of sussex
& which was initially my guess at the center monument

but then jc spotted in deckertown commons
directly across the street from the fountain
an octagonal gazebo
i kid you not
also circa 1902
& more or less properly oriented yet
which immediately displaced the fountain as leading contender for focal point

& in the paving stones around the gazebo were 10 rosettes with centers of 8 stones each
9 of them in a row
symbolizing i figured the 8 vertices & center point
& then the tenth one off on the side
perhaps recapitulating the entire octagon
& leading directly to the stairway of the arts showcase & real centerpiece of the community
the tri state actors theatre
i kid you not

i have asked a few people too
but no one knows anything

even a written history of sussex i found passes blissfully thru 1902 without even mentioning the incorporation
& shows the offset octagonal map without even remarking on its shape

it is like the town that went to sleep for 100 years

very nice place too

worth continuing the try if anyone is interested

but i think we are history here for now

beeps

oh & btw brendan
i have seen a few pages on the internet that say the tin bigha corridor is also near a place called tin bigha
possibly supporting or even being the source of your guess
& even one page that identifies tin bigha as a nearby island
but nothing i could feel very confident about in any of this
& no gazzetteer or map yet that identifies such a place

but i just wanted to give you the benefit of what i did find in favor of your guess
