were little more than the signs that announce townships (pop. 50 etc..). I <br/>
don&#39;t recall seeing anything indicating one Utah, except a rather shabby <br/>
welcome sign beyond the state line when one travels between Fredonia and Kanab.<br/>

The general impression is that the state line is a rather unwelcome <br/>
intrusion in that part of the country, which your explanation would appear <br/>
to bear out.<br/>
