The travertine pavement strip connecting the two arms of the colonnade was part of the 1667 design by Gianlorenzo Bernini.  It was not put there as a boundary marker, but it became one after the 1929 Lateran Treaty.

Well observed. But there is no travertine - it's a more profane material, sorry to say. The Catholic Church is crazy for money, and wouldn't waste it for simple border markings.
