nice observations all

& i can even underscore your main point with this report of a wet
njnypa visit too
tho the underwater photo has been lost
http://egroups.com/group/BoundaryPoint/message/7647

& my dictionary also gives this word history under trivial

a trivium was a meeting place of 3 roads
especially as a place of public resort

& the publicness of such a place also gave the word a pejorative
sense as in the english phrase
the gutter

the original word trivial thus meant
appropriate to the street corner
commonplace
vulgar

so my glib claim that trivial just meant 3way
& my appropriation of this supposed meaning to tripointing
really needs to be corrected or at least qualified to that extent

boundary trifinia are not intrinsically nor necessarily trivial at all

rather it is primarily street corners that are trivial
