laveen branch library marks the 5th maricopa county public library i have posted from
& this places maricopa
which flatly bills itself as americas best county
& not without some reason
in a tie with the 5 branch libraries of my own favorite monroe county florida

nor is this just an idle beep for purposes of library count
but the official report of my highly successful visit to the arizona state archives & library

nor was it so easy to find btw
since washington street is between adams & jefferson in phoenix
if you can imagine that
& it disappears completely for the state capital complex to boot
so you will just have to guess what a fiasco that was

but eventually i actually found in a dingy basement there state engineer atwoods original 1918 mayu survey plat
showing all 52 of his numbered longitude 113d20m mayu markers
beginning from number 1 at mapiyu aka the second standard parallel south
which he noted was 120point3 feet east of a stone section corner
thus explaining away the jog there himself from the very start
& ending at what he actually took to be lat 34 00 00 aka mayayu in his day
or what he called the north end of the mayu county line
& including lots of other goodies like his supreme court order number
etc
altogether a feast for the eyes

but better yet
buried under the atwood plat
& unseen even by the librarian who had dished it up for me
was the 1924 mayu plat as well
yikes
& not by thompson as we had thought
but bradstreet

& it showed & referred to atwoods terminal marker as the initial monument
even tho atwood himself only referred to it as number 52

so that mystery is finally completely solved

but more amazingly
it clearly showed that the 1924 corner number 1 point was
while obviously some 150 yards south of the atwood latitude
also if quite a bit less obviously still definitely out of alignment with the meridian of the initial monument
as i myself had also surmised from my squinty & cockeyed but now fully vindicated reading of some mismatched usgs topos you may recall

so the 1924 paleo lamaya evidently did disregard the precedence of both the latitude & longitude of the 1918 proto paleo lamaya

& it is quite a shock to see both of the 1918 coords bite the dust there in black & white

another nice detail is confirmation that bradstreet knew his terminal marker 31 was beyond the gimaya tripoint & thus actually a point on gima
so we have one additional county line there somewhat demarcated
for some reason
for whatever that is worth

but no sign of the 1908 moya survey
nor any other arizona county line survey whatsoever yet

a couple dozen of the perhaps 83 milestones from 1908 do show up well at topozone tho
so there is no doubt it really occurred

& beyond that
i have found nothing else of arizona county line markings
either at the library or topozone or in the field
so my conclusion for now & perhaps forever is
thats all she must have written
