Base Line Avenue in Apache Junction runs along the Gila and Salt River Base Line.  Meridian Drive runs along the Maricopa-Pinal county boundary northward from Base Line Avenue.  The county boundary south of the base line is offset about a quarter-mile west of the county line north of the base line, and is followed by Moeur Road.  The offset is because the county boundary is specified in the statutes as "the eastern line of range seven east" [of the true Gila and Salt River Meridian], and that range line similarly jogs at the base line.  The street addresses in Apache Junction are counted eastward and westward from Meridian Drive, so it might be thought of the "meridian" for local addresses.

Hi,

Thanks for the references, however unfortunately yahoo has dropped all attachments to emails so the pictures are no longer there.

I have somewhat of a dilemma. There are pictures on the internet, most of them of poor quality, of various Meridian markers. My dilemma is whether to include them on the web page now. I am concerned that if I do people will think they are finished and ignore going to get them.

I have been promised visits to the Salt Lake, Michigan, and Louisiana Meridians but they haven’t been done yet.

I have a question for you.

I asked my friend Paul to photo the San Bernardino Meridian and on the way home from Arizona he stopped and photoed what he thought was the Arizona Meridian and sent them to me. It fired me up and I created the web page with the 3rd, Willamette, and Arizona. Turns out he had the wrong location and Gene sent in the Gila and Salt River Meridian which I posted.

My question is why is there a Base line road and Meridian Road just west of Apace junction? Does it have any special meaning/connection to the Principal Meridian?

Thanks for your interest,

John
