so devoid of signposts & directionals is the papago reservation
that my first try for kaka went awry i thought in ventana
or in a place i took to be ventana at the time

for i decided soon after i left the pavement that the navigation was so difficult & the roads so poor that it would be better to postpone or even blow kaka off entirely in favor of the primary try
which was after all the tripoint of maricopa with pima & pinal counties

so i proceeded nne from the village i took to be ventana for several miles before i finally had to admit that the landscape didnt match the topo at all
hahahahaha
& i was also aware that i was pushing my truck to the limit of sensible use
& was way too deep into harsh desert as well as foreign territory perhaps for sanity

so i turned around ready to blow the whole try off now
& stopped for a picnic & to gather my wits

thinking myself all alone for miles i was nevertheless soon surprised by two indians who had come up quietly from behind on horseback

one of them asked me what i was doing

picnicking i said & offered him my box of triscuits
which was refused

& he continued
where was i going

so i offered my maps for illustration & asked for help with directions to the tripoint

he had to jump down to grasp the maps in the wind because his horse shied away from me
& he studied them for a long time
& consulted with his friend too in very strange sounds
before declaring
these maps are wrong

you are already in maricopa & way east of pinal

at first i thought
well what did i expect from locals
& indians yet

but then i got to thinking they might know something too

when it hit me

so that town over there that i just came thru cant be ventana
i declared

no he said
thats kaka

which of course explained everything

i had already overshot ventana previously & only thought i was in ventana when i blew kaka off

in reality i was in kaka at the time & couldnt have blown it off even if i had wanted to

he even pronounced kaka for me

the first k is more a palatal explosive & the second k is more a glottal click

but so anyway i took this opportunity of my excited discoveries to make good my escape
before they could think to ask me why i was going to the tripoint
& before i could think to ask them what kaka meant
& just left them marveling i suppose

who was that crazy white man & what was he doing anyway

& so i had to go back to the previous wide spot in the road for the real ventana
& the real jumping off place for mapipi

& on the second or third try from there i managed to reach the first dry wash north of town
tho it was on the due north road rather than the now useless if more direct nne road
before i reached an impassable spot there too

& then jumped out
& continued bushwhacking on foot to within a 2 mile crowfly of the target
when evening & dehydration slowed me
& concern about finding my way back to the truck in the dark
or in broad daylight for that matter
caused me to suspend the try at that point

until morning anyway

when i might still have another shot at restarting the 7 mile round trip hike

except i wanted to make a phonecall tonight

& also to report in to bp of course

so here i am at casa grande

& since the border patrol has proved to be so active in this area
despite the still considerable distance from mxus
& even set up a surprise if still dummy rearguard outpost on the main road just below chuichu during the few hours of my visit to the interior
i am not at all sure frankly that there will even be a retry

& it all depends on the outcome of the phonecall too
etc etc
so this may well mark the end of arizona tricounty pointing for a while
or forever
& the real end of my already hyperextended 2004 trypointing season

but whatever it is
it is certainly the end of my time at this library

beeps
