<div>that my first try for kaka went awry i thought in ventana</div>
<div>or in a place i took to be ventana at the time</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>for i decided soon after i left the pavement that&nbsp;the navigation was so difficult &amp; the roads so poor that it would be better to&nbsp;postpone or even blow kaka off entirely in favor of the primary try</div>
<div>which was after all the tripoint of maricopa with pima &amp; pinal counties</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>so i proceeded nne from the village i took to be ventana for several miles before i finally had to admit that the landscape didnt match the topo at all</div>
<div>hahahahaha</div>
<div>&amp; i was also aware that i was pushing my truck to the&nbsp;limit of sensible use</div>
<div>&amp; was way too&nbsp;deep into&nbsp;harsh desert as well as&nbsp;foreign territory perhaps for sanity&nbsp;</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>so i turned around ready to blow the whole try off now</div>
<div>&amp; stopped for a picnic &amp; to gather my wits</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>thinking myself all alone for miles i was nevertheless&nbsp;soon surprised by two indians who had come up quietly&nbsp;from behind on horseback </div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>one of&nbsp;them asked me&nbsp;what i was doing</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>picnicking i said &amp; offered&nbsp;him my box of triscuits </div>
<div>which was refused</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>&amp;&nbsp;he continued </div>
<div>where&nbsp;was i going</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>so i offered&nbsp;my maps for illustration &amp; asked for help with directions to&nbsp;the tripoint</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>he had to&nbsp;jump down to grasp the maps in the wind because his horse shied away from me</div>
<div>&amp; he studied them for a long time </div>
<div>&amp; consulted with his friend too in&nbsp;very strange&nbsp;sounds&nbsp;</div>
<div>before declaring</div>
<div>these maps are wrong</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>you are already in maricopa &amp; way east of pinal</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>at first i thought</div>
<div>well what did i expect from locals</div>
<div>&amp; indians yet</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>but then i got to thinking they might know something too&nbsp;</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>when&nbsp;it hit me </div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>so that town over there that i just came thru cant be ventana</div>
<div>i declared</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>no he said</div>
<div>thats kaka</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>which of course explained everything</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>i had already overshot ventana previously &amp; only thought i was in ventana when i blew kaka off</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>in reality i was in kaka at the time &amp; couldnt have blown it off even if i had wanted to</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>he even pronounced kaka for me</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>the first k is more a palatal explosive &amp; the second k is more a glottal click</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>but so anyway i took this opportunity of my excited discoveries to make good my escape </div>
<div>before they could think to ask me why i was going to the tripoint</div>
<div>&amp; before i could think&nbsp;to ask&nbsp;them what kaka meant</div>
<div>&amp; just left them marveling i suppose </div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>who was that crazy white man &amp; what was he doing anyway</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>&amp; so i had to go back to the previous wide spot in the road for the real ventana</div>
<div>&amp; the real jumping off place for mapipi</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>&amp; on the second or third try from there i managed to reach the first dry wash north of town</div>
<div>tho it was on the due north road rather than the now useless if more direct nne road</div>
<div>before i reached an impassable spot there too</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>&amp; then jumped out </div>
<div>&amp; continued bushwhacking on foot to within a 2 mile crowfly of the target</div>
<div>when evening &amp;&nbsp;dehydration slowed me</div>
<div>&amp; concern&nbsp;about finding&nbsp;my way back to the truck in the dark </div>
<div>or in broad daylight for that matter </div>
<div>caused me to suspend the try at that point</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>until morning anyway</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>when i might still have another shot at restarting&nbsp;the 7 mile round trip hike</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>except i wanted to make a phonecall tonight </div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>&amp; also to report in to bp of course</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>so here i am at casa grande</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>&amp;&nbsp;since the border patrol&nbsp;has proved to be&nbsp;so active in this area</div>
<div>despite the still considerable distance from mxus</div>
<div>&amp; even set up a surprise&nbsp;if still dummy rearguard outpost on the main road just below chuichu during the few hours&nbsp;of my&nbsp;visit to the interior&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</div>
<div>i am not at all sure frankly that there will even be a retry </div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>&amp; it&nbsp;all depends on the outcome of the phonecall too</div>
<div>etc etc</div>
<div>so this may well&nbsp;mark the end of arizona tricounty pointing for a while </div>
<div>or forever</div>
<div>&amp; the real end of my already hyperextended 2004 trypointing season</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>but whatever it is&nbsp;</div>
<div>it is certainly the end of my time at this library</div>
