A brush fire last week that started in Mexico and spread into the USA has done
significant damage to four miles of railway. Most importantly, the fire burned
out the timber supports within the only international railway tunnel between the
two countries, causing both portals to collapse.

The 598-foot tunnel (569.5 feet in the American state of California and 28.5
feet in the Mexican state of Baja California) was built in 1915. At the
boundary within the tunnel, the rails of Carizzo Gorge Railway meet those of
Ferrocarriles Peninsulares del Noroeste.

The tunnel and rail line are expected to be reopened in due time.
