William Shanks calculated pi to 707 places
by hand in 1873-74, but made an error
from the 527th place forward.
The error wasn't found until 1945.
The "Hall of Fame of Discovery"
in Paris had decorated the inside
of their cupola with Shanks's 707 digits.
Then, after WWII they had to redo the last 180.
The workmen were shaking their heads
over the crazy scientists.
